Riptide is an independent and local business based at the Pavilion in Hove Park next to the Hove Park Cafe.
We look to offer you the best possible health and fitness experience and promote physical activity and exercise to get the results you want and need in a fun, safe and friendly environment.
At Hove Park we run our own variety of exercise classes and sessions for those looking to begin or start getting fit again or to take their current levels of fitness and ability to new areas or raise your game by taking part in performance or sport specific sessions.
We coach you towards your desired outcomes for your health & fitness,
making the most of the best piece of fitness equipment you will ever own – Your Body.
We provide carefully designed and considered training sessions offering guidance, variety and fun (yes fun!) using your body, technical equipment and our environment to get you the best results from all of your workouts.
Primarily we look to strengthen, condition and improve your body’s ability to cope with real life everyday living activities, enhance your performance for sport and promote a higher state of vitality.
In short – this is fitness training for your life.
Other therapists, coaches, instructors, trainers and teachers are available for specialised treatments and classes for your individual needs, wellbeing and to promote other physical activities.
We offer a good sized studio with space for about 20 people, functional movement and strength training kit and a large wonderful exclusive grass area (a decommissioned bowls green) within a private hedge/fenced area.
Sessions and courses can be created for individuals, private groups or teams looking to experience personalised and specific fitness and performance programmes and outcomes.
The Riptide site at Hove Park Pavilion also offers independent therapists who offer a variety of treatments to prevent or manage conditions, to promote the ability to move, reduce pain, restore function and prevent disability.
The Riptide Studio, Treatment + Therapy Room and Green space is also let out to other trainers, coaches, teachers and instructors who run niche and specialist classes, courses and services. These can be found on our classes and therapist pages.
A Quick History
Riptide was originally set up as a gym-fitness centre located on Brighton beach, between the two piers, in 1996.
In 2013, sadly, following an inspection of the arches structure in 2012 in preparation of the i360 development, it was identified that the Council could no longer rent that location to Riptide and we moved temporarily to Hove Park Bowls Lawns on Kingsway.
Riptide ran the exciting and popular Fit Camp training sessions before getting the green light to move to a long term location, Hove Park Pavilion, within one of the best parks in Sussex, Hove Park next to the Old Shoreham Road.
Physical benefits of exercise include:
Physical resilience: Our body fights viruses in our immune system which includes organs like the skin, as well as white blood cells, the lymphatic system, the spleen, the thymus and bone marrow. All of these are strengthened with exercise and the associated benefits of increased oxygen in the lungs.
Better blood circulation: Exercise pumps blood (including those handy white blood cells) around the body to where it’s needed for repair.
Stronger bones and joints: While we’re sitting down working from home everyday, our bones and joints are suffering. Exercise helps keep them in tip-top condition.
Stress reducing: Exercise helps to regulate the levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, in our bodies.
Weight management: Exercise burns calories, which helps many of us stay at a healthy weight, which in turn keeps our lungs and hearts healthy.
Improved quality of sleep: If you find yourself waking up early in the morning or struggling to get to sleep at night, then exercise could be the answer. In turn, sleep helps our cells repair themselves, along with helping the immune system and our general health.
Mental health benefits of exercise include:
Reducing stress: Many people say that exercise is one of the main ways they reduce stress so with more of us working from home than ever before, we’ll need to keep stress levels low.
Creating resilience: Due to the physical challenges of exercise, it helps us create positive coping strategies and helps to develop mental resilience.
Releases endorphins: The famous ‘feel-good’ hormones make us feel fantastic, a key feature in improving our mental health through lockdown.
Less mental fatigue: By changing up our daily routine with exercise, we can avoid the mental fatigue that comes with doing the same thing, in the same place, every day.
Improved sleep quality: Better sleep has been proven to help those struggling with their mental health during difficult times due to the physical benefits it creates.
